Suddenly the next question came – “Okay, then how many friends and fan pages you have on Facebook?” This question from the interviewer made the guy shocked and confused. He was thinking why the interviewer was asking about Social networking connection when he applied for an online business promotion company.
Yes, this is the real game now days. We all know the beginning and thoughts behind social networking websites. I do remember, the first popular social network before 4-5 years was Orkut. I could see that my colleagues were skipping office hours with ‘orkutting’. But it was quite personal then. They got connected with their friends, shared their updates and jokes, and had a nice time with that.
The Personal Game
Time has changed and the people. Other great social networking platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Friendster got into the game (or business?). It was pretty fine to an extent. But now it’s all business running over MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter. You may be still able to find some people who really use social networking sites for their friendship and personal connections, but actually its very rare now.
The Link Factor
I think before talking about the strategies, we must have a look at the reason why these social networking lost its soul. It’s 100% the link – popularity – affiliate business – referral hits – and such factors. So what is this link factor? SEO SEO SEO. Yeah search engine optimization is a link game. The number of links, the quality of links etc are very very important. So apart from the normal ways people started to move on with the new findings, and ie Social networking. Google and other search engines pay attention to the websites depending on their link measures. This was a primary reason. As any body can easily create profiles and put some links there (Profile link building) in such sites.
Popularity Factor
You might have visited some profiles with more than ten thousand friends or followers. Do you think that he is trying to get connected to all these guys and that’s the reason behind he is trying to get more and more friends? Definitely not. It’s because of the popularity factor. Popular profiles get extra link juice and they get more visitors to their profiles. This can boost their profile pages link juice and the next factor that is referral hits. Referral hits are the visits to your websites referred from another website. That is, if a person is getting 100 visitors to his profile per day, it’s sure that at least a half of them will check his links. So what’s bad with the guys effort to bring more and more friends and hence visits to his websites? Its all business. Intelligent guys utilize the same idea with fake profiles and friends to get their affiliate business run.
Conclusion: We cannot blame anybody or we can’t even say that this is not fare. Because it’s all money, business, competition etc. And these all are very ‘white hat’ seo methods. Even though these social networking sites lost their soul, its working well with business. As long as they help grow one’s business and seo strategies more and more people will be coming to this. So I write this post as an intro to the coming posts. I mean I’ve a plan to share my ideas and views on various social networking sites for search engine optimization. So ask me a question – ‘Why this is important’ – My quick answer will be – “because these are the other ways to get traffic, hits, sales to your websites and blogs other than from search engines”. I know many people who are getting hundreds (even thousands of referral visits sometimes) from social networking websites alone.
